Powder Magazine

Powder Magazine
Fort Anne, Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia is Canada's oldest fortifications, dating back to 1629 when the Scots came to colonize Nova Scotia (New Scotland) and built what they called Charles Fort. This is the the munitions bunker constructed while under French occupation in 1708 and one of the few remaining original structures on the site. It was constructed below ground level to reduce the risk of a direct hit from any attacking navel vessels.

You access the powder magazine by going down stairs in the front. The brickwork above the door entrance can be seen just below the little window. The bunker is a separated from the surrounding hill by a brick walled trench that encircles the building allowing you to walk around the building eight feet below ground level.

Well Anna it's not a house, it's a place where the gun powder of the time was stored in barrels. The structure was constructed below ground to protect the contents from a direct hit from invading forces. This fort traded hands between the French, English and Americans seven times before Canada became a British Sovereignty. It's said to be the most fought over piece of land in North America.

You should make a side trip to the fort David if you get the chance. It's in Annapolis Royal but wait till summer. The officer's quarters is having a face lift from Parks Canada this winter in preparation for the summer tourist season.

I do like the design of the roof and wonder if this is from the original style ...
your information makes good reading so thanks fro that. I imagine the views
from where the cannon sits are tremendous.
