Sky hook

Sky hook
In the bad old days (pre political correctness) apprentices were often told to get a "sky hook" which sent them off on a meaningless journey. I have however found such an object - and here is the proof

Nice hook!
In Bavaria its usualy the bottle of "Ibidum" that is searched for (with proper spaces translated to "I am a silly"). Of course at apprentice age, all people know the joke already, so usually it is done to young children from ambitious families (those raised without regional vernacular language skills) by more streewise age mates.

As a new clerical officer in a local government office, I was left a written message with a phone number and a request to ask a Mr. C.Lyon if he wanted Meals-on-wheels. The number was of course London Zoo. The telephonist at the zoo (because they had such people then - in 1966) was very polite and said that they had a good stock of herrings and didn't need our service!
