B+W 486 UV-IR Cut filter

B+W 486 UV-IR Cut filter
A small toy can be seen in the reflection from a B+W 486 UV-IR cut filter.

The B+W 486 UV-IR Cut Filter blocks Ultraviolet and Infrared light, while allowing through visible light at around a 90% transmission rate. Ultraviolet and Infrared light focus at different distances to visible light, so by blocking UV and IR light, the B+W 486 UV-IR Cut Filter can provide clearer and sharper images.

The filter can provide an appreciable improvement in image quality when used with cameras sensitive to infrared or ultraviolet light, such as older Nikon DSLRs.

The B+W 486 UV-IR Cut Filter is constructed using absolutely color-neutral substrate glass, and like all B+W photo filters, the surfaces of the glass are fine-ground and polished in order to meet the high optical requirements. Several interference coatings are vapor-deposited on both sides, and the filter is MRC-coated to reduce likelihood of scratches and make cleaning the filter easier.

The UV-IR barrier filter is based on thin-film technology, which means that an increasing angle of incidence of light rays striking the filter will lead to a change in light color towards blue. So the filter is not suitable for lenses with an angle of view greater than 60°.
