Marine Lake, Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset 31 August 2016

Marine Lake, Weston-Super-Mare, Somerset 31 August 2016
Warning sign by the Knightstone Island end of the causeway which traps the water in Marine Lake as the tide recedes, and provides a short cut to Birnbeck Pier and Kewstoke.

Marine Lake was formed in 1927 by building the causeway to create a tidal pool providing bathing for tourists at low tide when, because of the distance to the sea, over thick unpleasant and dangerous mud, it was impossible to bathe in the open sea. We went on a caravan holiday to Kewstoke in the mid 1950s, using what we then called the marina, for swimming and paddling in. I can remember in the early morning seeing lorries fetching sand in to the beach at the marina to replenish what had been washed out to sea.
