Tower of Hands, High Street, Blackwood, Caerphilly County Borough 16 October 2015

Tower of Hands, High Street, Blackwood, Caerphilly County Borough 16 October 2015
A plethora of street furniture. The "Tower of Hands" by Jon Mills, is in cor-ten weathering steel (just looks rusty to me) and 200 local residents "had a hand" in making it. It was commissioned in 2006.

We had a "public sculpture" of rusty steel which caused much controversy until finally it was removed. But it was a trifle bigger than yours.

I've just checked it out - I'll never complain about Cwmbran street art again! Seventeen thousand seems a poor return for two million. I'm sure the worthy burghers of Manchester enjoyed it though!

It was the ugliest thing in the world, and stood beside a major junction, so you couldn't avoid seeing it when traveling. And it didn't help that bits kept dropping off. Fortunately no-one was ever struck by one of the giant metal spikes, but I think everyone heaved a sigh of relief when it was removed. it was hated from day one because of its "rusty" appearance. It might not have been so unpopular had it been clean and shiny and sparkled in the sun.
