St David's Church, Llanthony, Monmouthshire 14 October 2015

St David's Church, Llanthony, Monmouthshire 14 October 2015
Memorial tablets on the chancel wall. The 12th Century altar is said to be aligned to face the rising sun on 1st March.

This was originally a hermit's cell said to have been established in the 6th Century by St David, and one of the most sacred sites in Wales. A monastic settlement grew up around it, and in the early 12th Century, a priory was built there as a cell, but within ten years a full Augustinian priory had been established. The current church is believed to have been the infirmary of the priory. As with many of these early churches, a great deal of restoration was carried out in the 19th Century.
