One side of this stone, shows the name Waclaw Peniuk, and the Ukrainian "trizub" or trident with the top formed into a cross. On the other side of the stone is the name Vasil' Stepanovich Penyuk and the Ukrainian inscription Vichnaya Pam'yat' (Eternal Memory). Vasil' Stepanovich are Russian/Ukrainian names whereas Waclaw is Polish, linked to Wenceslas. This presumably indicates he came originally from West Ukraine; very likely he was a German POW who ended up in UK and avoided forcible repatriation (and death).
The cemetery, on the mountain on the outskirts of Blaenavon, was opened in the early 20th Century and today is in two halves, the original and a newish extension with
