Varteg Road Cemetery, Blaenavon, Pontypool 5 July 2014
The Royal Naval Patrol Service operated auxiliary vessels for minesweeping and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) patrols to protect British waters and convoys. HMS Berkshire was a trawler which was finished in 1936 and taken over by the Royal Navy as an ASW Trawler in 1939. She was returned to her owners in 1946 and, after various name changes was scrapped in 1958. Seaman Stephens is one of 15000 RNPS personnel who perished keeping our coast clear.
The cemetery, on the mountain on the outskirts of Blaenavon, was opened in the early 20th Century and today is in two halves, the original and a newish extension with plenty of burial space.
