The Price of Coal (and War) - Varteg Road Cemetery, Blaenavon, Pontypool 5 July 2014

The Price of Coal (and War) - Varteg Road Cemetery, Blaenavon, Pontypool 5 July 2014
The tragic Ethel Carver who lost a husband to coal in 1939 and four years later, a son to war.
The Big Pit shaft was sunk to 200 feet in 1860, then deepened to 300 feet in 1880. It was an amalgamation of several early 19th Century mines. It closed in 1980 and today is open to the public, with genuine underground tours.
The cemetery, on the mountain on the outskirts of Blaenavon, was opened in the early 20th Century and today is in two halves, the original and a newish extension with plenty of burial space.
