Swallow Nest, HQ Gwent Police, Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran 1 July 2014

Swallow Nest, HQ Gwent Police, Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran 1 July 2014
There is a colony of swallows (Hirundo rustica) which nests at HQ every year. One pair appears to have shunned the main colony by building a nest for the last couple of years separate from their fellow swallows, in the loading bay. Here, the nestlings, peeking cautiously over the rim of the nest.

Interesting nest. I notice some similarities with the mud swallow nests I find around where I live, but they are different as well.

I've seen much neater swallow nests than this, but they are usually self supporting; this one is incorporated into a cable. Rather touchingly, staff have cut an aperture in a hardboard partition to allow the parents access out of office hours.

That is very compassionate of them.

Aren't police renowned for their compassion?!

They aren't "renowned" for it, but they do have it, just like in any other group. I'm a bit biased in their favor since I grew up in a police family. The problem with general views of policemen are caused by the few that are a-holes and stick that impression on the rest of them.

I know what you mean, I work for the police and know there are"good 'uns" and "bad 'uns" (as in all walks of life).
