William Chappell costume design for Giselle

William Chappell costume design for Giselle
At the outbreak of the second World War in 1939, William Chappell was the first male ballet dancer to join the armed forces. As a second lieutenant in the British Army in North Africa he led his men on an 18 mile march and his ballet legs and feet meant he arrived fresher than those half his age who had only received routine Army physical training.

He contrasted the treatment of the ballet in England and in Russia, where male dancers were considered important enough in their work to be kept out of the military.
