UNT0017 13. SHEEP SHEARING CONTEST BELLE FOURCHE S.D.

UNT0017 13. SHEEP SHEARING CONTEST BELLE FOURCHE S.D.
POSTCARD

Date: Not evident. Not Posted.

Publisher / Photographer: G. A. Barrowclough

Notation: Photographer is believed to have been in South Dakota only for a short time for the early months of 1906, primarily in the Deadwood area. Belle Fourche is about 20 miles north of Deadwood.

The number 13 in the postcard caption is very interesting. Barrowclough is not known to have typically numbered his photographs. The number likely indicates that his is from a series a postcards that numbered at least 13. Possibly this sheep-shearing contest was part of a larger event taking place in Belle Fourche at that time and Barrowclough took a number of photos of it.

At the time, Belle Fourche (pronounced 'Bell Foosh') was the agricultural center of the Tri State area of northwestern South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming, and southeastern Montana.
