WP2201 WPG - [ABANDONED STREETCAR - PORTAGE & MAIN]

WP2201 WPG - [ABANDONED STREETCAR - PORTAGE & MAIN]
POSTCARD

Date: Not evident. Not Posted.

Publisher / Photographer: Unidentified

Notation: Because of both the policeman perched on the side of the streetcar and the graffiti on the side of it, I am guessing that this photo was taken during the 1906 Winnipeg Street Railway Strike. What is particularly interesting is the location of the photo - much further south than where most of the action took place and where most of the photographs were taken. This streetcar, in fact is parked in the intersection of Main Street and Portage Avenue.

Main Street is in the foreground and the camera is pointed northeast. The building on the right side is the Canada Permanent Building, occupying the site now boasting the Bank of Montreal. (In 1909, the Bank of Montreal purchased the site and Canada Permanent built its new Winnipeg offices at 298 Garry Street on the site of the former Manitoba Club.)

The row of buildings behind the streetcar are all located on the north side of Portage Avenue East. Of particular note is the building seen in the space between the Canada Permanent Building and the streetcar. This is the business of Geo. Velie - Wholesale Wines and Liquors, at 183-187 Portage Avenue. This image, taken from Martel's large An Illustrated Souvenir of Winnipeg book, shows this building from a similar angle and in great detail:

This postcard by G. A. Barrowclough, from the same time period, shows this location in a broader context:

It is tram no. 28 -- the low number probably means it was one of the oldest ones in the city. It looks smaller and less advanced than the other trams that appear in other 1906 strike cards. Outstanding acquisition!

Yes, I've sent a note to Steven Strothers to see if he has any additional info on tram 28.
