WP1868 WPG - RALPH CONNOR'S CHURCH

WP1868 WPG - RALPH CONNOR'S CHURCH
Posted September 20, 1905, this card shows a great early image of St. Stephen's Presbyterian (later United) Church, the current-day Elim Chapel. The photographer/publisher of this card is George A. Barrowclough.

Located at 546 Portage Avenue, at the SW corner of its intersection with St. Mary's, this church achieved international recognition as the home church of Rev. Dr. Charles William Gordon. Dr. Gordon, under the pen name Ralph Connor, was a highly successful writer - becoming one of the best-selling authors of his time. Note that the caption identifies the church as "Raph Connor's Church".

The sender of this postcard, Ida Pearl Hamilton, writes to her friend Miss Ida J. Munn in New York; "We will attend this church. This Church is one block from our home."

This is a view of the front of the church - facing Portage Avenue. Note the private residences flanking the church on both Portage & St. Mary's. Is the gentleman with the shovel perhaps removing horse droppings from the (dirt) street?
