A Block of Streamline Moderne Flats - Prahran

A Block of Streamline Moderne Flats - Prahran
With people wishing to have smaller and more easily managed houses after the Great War (1914 - 1918), architects began designing new ways of living in the 1920s and 1930s including flats and maisonettes.

This wonderfully stylised 1930s Streamline Moderne block of flats, is a perfect example of this new way of living during the Interwar period that would have been very fashionable and popular with the "bright young things" of the interwar period.

The clean uncluttered lines of the flats, the speed lines around the pediment of the rounded portico and rounded stairwell, feature bricks in geometric patterns and the overall low slung design of the house are very Streamline Moderne in design. The Functionalist Moderne metal windows, and the leadlight feature windows are also typical of Art Deco architecture in Australia and around the world. The common staircase used by the upper flats is not visible or expressed on the facade, as at this time flats with external staircases were associated with insalubrious lower class housing. This set of flats were intended to attract and represent respectability.
