Partial view of the desolate town of San Antonio Viejo de Lipez (elev. 4,550 m), which was the center of a silver mining district since at least the 10th century. About 150,000 persons lived there, and the town had 21 churches. By the mid of the XIXth century, a terrifying rumor ran across the city, claiming the Devil had settled into the mines, so all the inhabitants fleed away. Cerro Lipez (elev. 5,929 m) in the background.
