Bolivia #32

Bolivia #32
On the shore of Laguna Verde (elev. 4,300m). Were these innocent travelers playing on snow? No. In other places, this stuff would be named:"toxic waste"!
This immaculate foam is made of organic salts, which are here compounds of heavy metals, mostly arsenic, All of them were spat by the nearby Licancabur volcano, and explained the deep green tint of the laguna.

Hi Jan!
This kind of organo-metallic soup (the laguna) or foam is almost "azoic", without any superior form of life. Certainly bacteria are present, but you can't find fishes in this deadly green lagoon, birds on the shore or in the water, and insects in any place. My friends only had to carefully wash their hands after this snowball party. Heavy metals salts are toxic, but they are not like cyanogen !

II was expecting that JF...incredible life can exist in such harsh places.....seen on "earth-flight" birds are so clever..eating the insects at the shore of the lake, they seems to win it over humans every time again..we can't live there

thanks for explaining JF
