Svinafellsjökull is one of the glacier tongues coming down from Öræfajökull, a subglacial volcano in the southern part of Vatnajökull. Öræfajökull 's 1362 plinian eruption was a catastrophic VEI 6.

The icebergs floating on Jökulsárlón stem from Breiðamerkurjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull. A very short river connects the glacial lagoon to the sea where fragments of icebergs dot the black lava beach. Die Eisberge auf dem Jökulsárlón kommen vom Breiðamerkurjökull, einem Auslassgletscher des Vatnajökull. Ein sehr kurzer Fluss verbindet die Gletscherlagune mit dem Meer, wo Fragmente von Eisbergen am schwarzen Lavastrand liegen.

Jökulsárlón, fed by Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, is famous for its floatings icebergs. It is a popular film setting- for a James Bond movie the short river leading to the sea was blocked so the lake could freeze over.
