Plane wreck

Plane wreck
In 1968 three American Lockheed T-33 crashed near Kangerlussuaq. They couldn't land because of whiteout conditions and ran out of fuel but the pilots managed to save themselves. Bits of wreckage still lie around by the roadside.

That is sad Gudrun. I wonder why they have left parts of the planes there? You have recorder it very well.

Thanks a lot, Rosa! The Americans had a base nearby and when they gave it up they left all their rubbish, as miliitary usually do, especially in such extremely sparsely populated areas.

Traurige Geschichte - aber wenigstens gabs keine Toten! Die haben wohl keine Schrottsammler auf Grönland??

Gudrun club has replied to Dida From Augsburg

Looking at the PiP, it's amazing that there were no casualties. I have seen a crashed plane in Norway,

Thank you so much, Amelia! These were military planes with only one pilot and an ejector seat;-)

Gudrun club has replied to ©UdoSm club
Herzichen Dank, Udo!

A cracking little set of photos Gudrun.................I like the main image especially but I'd never have guessed what it was without the PiP.

I also like the wider view that shows more wreckage. The details are fantastic and that flash of yellow draws the eye immediately.

I'm amazed that anyone survived the crash............but sadly not surprised that the US Military left the wreckage for someone else to clear up!

Gudrun club has replied to Keith Burton club
Many thanks, Keith! The PiP was definitely necessary for context;-) I think fighter pilots are trained in using the ejector seat and they knew they were going to crash...
Well, not only the US military, the Greenlanders themselves just leave their old stuff to rot and sewage goes into the ocean....

Oh my goodness, such is the life of fighter pilots. Thankfully they were able to eject from the plane. It's a shame the debris was not cleared away by the American Military. It's interesting to see, although it does clutter the environment. Thanks for sharing Gudrun. :)

Many thanks, Chris! At the time the planes crashed there wasn't a road. But around the airport you can see many rusty oil drums. Well, Greenlanders themselves don't clean up their rubbish so much, it just gets collected out of sights. What will burn gets burned, everything else lies around in heaps;-)

Incredible that anyone could walk away from this unharmed Gudrun. Amazing images. I am also surprised that the wreckage was just left there, - a sobering sight for anyone seeing this I would imagine.

4 years ago.
Gudrun club has replied to niraK68 club

Hi Gudrun

Very interesting story and nice photos too.

There are a few bits of old airplane wrecks on the mountains of Snowdonia too. Just too far away from a road to be worth the effort of collecting.

Best Wishes,
Peter
