Gjástykki

Gjástykki is a rift zone in the northern reaches of the Krafla fissure swarm. The scoria cones and lava flows in this photo stem from the 1975-84 "Krafla fires". The fence was erected to keep sheep out and halt erosion.

Gjástykki ist eine Riftzone im nördlichen Bereich des Krafla-Vulkansystems. Die Schlackekegel und Lavaströme auf dem Foto stammen aus den sog. "Krafla-Feuern" 1975-84. Der Zaun soll die Schafe heraushalten und dadurch die Bodenerosion stoppen.

Such a beautiful landscape with some striking contrast and colour changes as you look through the image. Really well composed and exposed, with great depth.

The landscape looks quite benign at the moment, but I've been reading the article in the link and it just shows how quickly things can change..............very scary..!!

As others have said, great contrasts between the different layers in the picture! I noticed in Iceland that there is so much volcanic activity that things are always changing, landscapes getting cut by lava flows, etc etc. Fascinating place!
