Punakaiki beach

This gives a really good impression of the pancake rocks on the beach, Gudrun. A very interesting place for a walk.

Thanks a lot, Amelia! At low tide it was a great place- and hardly any sandflies! (Sandflies are the midges of NZ, only worse...)

Unwirtlich ist es eigentlich nicht so sehr, nur sehr viel Niederschlag, wie es für Westküsten typisch ist. Die Vegetation ist üppig.

Blätterkrokant, Döner, Pfannkuchen, Blätterteig - Du hast uns ein sehr appetitanregendes Foto serviert, Gudrun ;-). Dass bei hoher Luftfeuchtigkeit die Vegetation üppig ist, leuchtet ein.
Das Wort "Punakaiki" ist sicherlich Māori-Sprache, klingt lustig. Ich war noch nie in Neuseeland, werde auch nicht mehr dorthin kommen. Aber alle, die dort waren, sind begeistert!

Ja, das ist Maori! Da gibt es noch viel lustigere Namen wie z.B. Pipiriki;-) Zur Bedeutung habe ich folgendes gefunden: "One interpretation says it's a Ngai Tahu word to describe the neck and throat. Another says it is from "puna" for spring and "kaike" meaning to lie in a heap."
Ich war insgesamt 3x in Neuseeland, aber mit jedem Mal war mir der Flug beschwerlicher. Ich habe schon alle möglichen Varianten, auch mit Schiff, durchgespielt, weil es mir jetzt auf die Zeit nicht mehr ankommt, aber das ist so exorbitant teuer, dass es auch keine Alternative ist.

Interessante Gesteinsstrukturen.

Place i know well lived in Westport for 3 years. Sand flies are there nice shot of the place.

Thank you, Steve! I love this coast but I don't think I could face the damp all year round! I hate sandflies, they may be slow but they still manage to get at you. I had my bites for a long time, they always got worse after a while...
