Like neighbouring Humberstone Santa Laura saltpeter works were closed down in 1960 and gained World Heritage status in 2005. whc.unesco.org/en/list/1178

Thanks a lot, Diane! We spent hours there, you could feel the history. There's a very good book by Ariel Dorfman- "Desert Memories: Journeys Through the Chilean North" which manages to catch the essence of this area.
