Reykjarfjörður (PiP)

Reykjarfjörður (PiP)
Reykjarfjörður is a side arm of Suðurfirðir, the southern part of Arnarfjörður. There are thermal springs and a small pool at Reykjarfjörður, Reyk in place names denoting hot springs. The farms are deserted and only summer homes are left, a typical story in the depopulated western fjords.
Summer inhabitants include sheep and arctic terns (see inset photos). The latter are extremely aggressive defending theis nests.

Island <3 Fantastisches Bild, Gudrun!!

Thank you, Jaap! This is the least visited part of Iceland.

A wild landscape beautifully captured here, Gudrun. I must visit Iceland one day.

Gorgeous landscape -- well captured, as always. It does look like a tough environment to live year-round. Great shot of the tern.

Gudrun has replied to Juleann
Thanks a lot, Juleann! It is tough, especially in this part of the country. Roads over the mountains are often impassable in winter and communities are cut off.
The terns were really bad there- we stayed well away from their nesting sites because their attacks can give you serious head injuries.

I agree with Juleann on this Gudrun. Looks like it was a hard life there - its July and there's still snow on the hills. I like the tern image too.

Thanks, Graham! It was hard and when the local fishing industry collapsed many left the area to look for jobs in Reykjavik. People who need the bright lights of a city would go crazy during the winters in the fjords...

Gudrun has replied to Gisela Plewe
Besten Dank, Gisela!

Thanks very much, Diane! It would have been very isolated in winter but at least they had the advantage of a hot spring.-)
