I guess you do not get an answer all the time, right? :)
Creating is often intuitive. There is no reasoning involved in the making process. Sometimes you rationalize a posteriori, but are that the real reasons for your unconscious decisions?
Having said that, grain is one possibility to abstract from a simple image.
