The houses seen were built in 1701 as a residential area for the working class. These are the last remnants of what once was called corridor quarter, in German Gängeviertel. Notorious for the bad living conditions and a hatchery for epidemic diseases like the cholera which infested Hamburg at a time when it had gone extinct elsewhere in Europe, the corridors were finally destroyed in the 1930ies.
Mind you, this one is called broad corridor!
