Elegant Aunt

Elegant Aunt
Hilda was a corsetiere. She made my maternal grandmother's corsets. Then she married the eldest son. First they lived in Douala, Cameroon, where he was a cocoa arbitrator working for Holt, an importer based in Liverpool. Then they moved to Paris where they lived until retirement. Harry became quite eminent, and very fat. I remember her taking me to a Chanel fashion show, and a dress fitting - both supremely boring, even embarassing, to a girl of my temperament. She used to have a new camel coat every year and give the old one to her maid, Amelie. The only thing she could cook was leeks vinaigrette (my mother said, disparagingly)
