Bungle Bungle Range - Purnululu National Park 2

Bungle Bungle Range - Purnululu National Park 2
Thanks for visiting. Comments, favourites and invitations are very appreciated.

Looks better on black (press "Z").

Purnululu National Park in Western Australia contains the Bungle Bungle Range. Purnululu means sandstone in the local Aboriginal language.

The most well-known feature of the Bungle Bungle Range is the banded, beehive-shaped cone towers on its eastern side, a few of which are seen here. Their maximum height is about 250 m. They are composed primarily of sandstone over 350 million years old, which has been eroded in the last 20 million years into the cones.

The steeply sloping sides of the cones are distinctly marked by horizontal lighter and dark bands. The darker bands are on the more permeable layers of rock that allow moisture to seep through to the rock surface, promoting a dark blue-green algal growth. The less permeable layers in between are covered with a coating of iron and manganese oxides, creating the orange bands. These outer coatings (the rock beneath is a whitish colour) help to protect the lower parts of the towers from erosion.

The cones vary in colour following rain and the positioning of the sun.

There are 3 non-clickable notes. The first note was taken at midday on the ground. All the other photos were taken from the air later in the day when the shadows were much longer. The second and third notes highlight the number and variation in shape of the cones which are spread over many kilometres.

My previous Bungle Bungle posting was of the western side of the Bungle Bungle Range.

I wasn't lucky enough to see this exceptional relief in Australia. Only Uluru and Les Olgas.

Thank you. Even though I am Australian, I confess to never having been to Uluru and the Olgas. Will get there. I would recommend going to the Bungle Bungles if you are in Australia again but they're harder to get to than Uluru.
