Flowers and buds of a red flowering gum, Corymbia ficifolia

In Explore

Quite a few Australian flowers are red. It is believed that their red colour has evolved specifically to attact birds such as honeyeaters and lorikeets. Birds see red well but insects do not. (see www.australiangeographic.com.au/news/2013/03/red-flowers-the-trick-to-attracting-birds)

Flowering gums are in the family Myrtaceae, the myrtle family, and are amongst the group of plants commonly known as eucalpyts or gums. This one comes from Western Australia and grows well as a garden plant.

The flower has numerous red fluffy stamens. In the bud, the stamens are enclosed in two caps known as opercula. The inner cap is formed from fused petals. The caps give rise to the name eucalypt, which is derived from Greek, and means well-covered. As the flower opens, the stamens expand and the caps are forced off, splitting away from the cup-like base of the flower. In some of these buds, the caps are starting to split from the flower base.

I doubt they are frost tolerant so they probably would not grow in a lot of the US - maybe why you have not seen them.

What a beautiful and interesting looking flower! I always think flowers in other parts of the world are so much more exotic than those we have in the UK! This one really is though! :)
