Nice one Richard , most of the chaffinches I see tend to have a nasty growth over their legs .

Hi vince

hope Richard doesn't mind my replying but the growth is a Fungus infection caused by mites that's bite them when they visit UNCLEANED feeders... I have wrote about cleaning feeders and this infection before... every month feeders should be taken down and cleaned in warm soupy water with some disinfection in it to kill the mites before drying in the wind for a while before refilling and hanging again... my local NNR ( national nature reserve ) had this for most of last year and removed the feeders for months trying to get rid of it..

sorry Richard for taking a lot of your space up..

not to sure why Richard nut they do seem to be only bird that its on apart from the TITS... I seems to remember that Great and Blue tits have the same problem.. maybe its because of the feathers on the feet that the mites get into.

Hi Derek and Richard, sorry Richard for continuing here but what Derek says is obviously true. The chaffinches I have seen were mostly at Newlands Corner where there is a little nature corner , I have also seen it elsewhere but for the life of me I cannot recall where that was now. I do have bluetits call at home but no chaffinches here unfortunately . I do remember the discussion defore Derek .
