Famine Village.

Famine Village.
A deserted village, dated back to the Great Famine in Ireland(1845-1852)was a period of mass starvation, disease, and emigration. Before this the village would have been home to the small tenant farmers of the day. It’s now silent passages speak to us across the centuries of hasty abandonment in the face of forced emigration, or certain death by slow starvation. Now all overgrown there is just the walls of the village left standing the test of time.

I can imagine the descendants being here in the US, somewhere. Maybe I'm one of them!

I suppose I should. I have extensive volumes on my dad's English family and the German/Scots side of my mom. Mom is 91, so I really need to ask if she knows her immigrant grandparents' first names and I doubt she knows more than that. Apparently, everyone referred to her g-mother as just Mum. Lol! There was an old-timey stigma about them, because Mom's parents were divorced before Mom was born in 1925. That was a terrible scandal for the time and my mother did not ask her mother much about the Gills.

A quick story: An uncle of mine researched the family tree, part of which involved visiting an old aunt at 95 years young.he set up a recorder to record the chat with her, which lasted over a couple of hours.A few weeks later he went to play back the interview only to discover he had forgot to turn on the recorder!!!!. Sadly the aunt died a few days later!!!
