06-07 Royal Mile TARDIS

06-07 Royal Mile TARDIS
O for a wide angle lens. Anyway there are dozens of these original 'Police Information' boxes around Edinburgh. Some are even used as mobile espresso bars. This one though on the royal mile is probably one of the ones in better condition. The Edinburgh's Police Boxes are relatively large, and are of a rectangular plan, with a design inspired by the city's abundance of neoclassical architecture. A bit different to the more squarish one used in Doctor Who.

The idea of using a Police Box as the TARDIS in Doctor Who came about almost by accident. The original production team in the 1960s had very little budget in which to make Doctor Who so had to make the best use of what was already available.
"We've got a police box from Dixon of Dock Green - let's make a box that's bigger on the inside", and thus was born the single best idea in all of fiction.
