Decorative ironwork appeared on buildings in cities, towns and even villages. Here a devil's head is placed above a spout, which would have directed rain water from the roof away from the façade of a building. Exotic beasts, grotesque faces and gargoyles were common features of late medieval and Renaissance architecture.
