Detail of painted wooden statue of St. Roch (Spanish, c. 1540-50), Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 21 July 2013.

From the wall text: St Roch, patron saint of plague victims, is shown holding a pilgrim's staff and a clapper to warn people of his disease. The dog licking his sores had saved his life by bringing him bread. This sculpture was probably once part of an altarpiece, or placed against a pillar in a church.
