This powerful image depicts a skull rising out of the ocean pictured against a Japanese imperial flag. Small, struggling figures are dragged by the current into the skull's mouth. This cartoon was created by Jack Chen, a half-Chinese, half-Trinidadian cartoonist and journalist trained in Moscow and Yan'an, to rais awareness of China's plight in the Asia-Pacific War (1931-1945) against Japan. Once published, the skull image was appropriated by propagandists in Burma and other countries in conflict with Japan.
