Girls' School Catches Monsters (c. 1920s; Chinese woodcut), British Museum, London, 19 July 2013. From the wall text:

These schoolgirls are battling monsters from the 'Cloudy Mountains' of the Western Ocean. The modern girls are dressed in hats and boots. Fighting alongside them are past heroines with bound feet. This woodcut may be read as anti-foreign, and the girls are fighting to rid China of Westerners. Or it may be showing that girls are active participants in modernising China's political and military affairs. Although the original intent may have been progressive, such prints were often exoticised and even sexualised by different printing centres for commercial exploitation.
