Men's cult houses dominate Iatmul villages. They are up to 120 feet in length, with two floors and towering gables at either end, and are lavishly decorated. In a society that once emphasised male warfare and head-hunting, the house is an aggressive assertion of power. Carvings such as this housepost reflected this.
