Grey blocks
Carefully arranged.
The patterns we make
Important only to ourselves.
Stretching right around the shore
As defiant as a child.
Tarnished slightly orange.
Nature's whisper of what's to come.

Behind where we stand
Even higher concrete walls
Have been placed
But with a gap.
So that we can still enjoy the view
From time to time
Of our delusion.

But no longer do we often look.
Standing as far back as possible.
From our history.
No one tolerates the storm any longer.

Ignoring the swell,
We try to filter out the noise
That's ringing in our ears
Even from a distance.
Waiting to crash
Into our defences.
It's hard work.

The storm smiles,
And then in it comes,
Shameless in its loudness
And abandon
Senseless to us now.

We shore up our defences.
But the storm overflows
Caressing then engulfing
Before calmly following us
Up the beach, and beyond
Like the embarrassing lover
We thought we'd left behind.

Wow, can't decide what to like more, the picture or the poem. In any case, what hits me most is the traffic-sign-post in the center (tiny, brave and useless); and these lines gives me a shiver:

The storm smiles,
And then in it comes,
