Kyanite

Kyanite
Nice deep-blue crystal of kyanite (a crystal that forms deep in the crust at high pressures) in quartz-rich rock. This sample was found near Parry Sound in Ontario. The kyanite is about 5 cm (2 inches) long.

Beautiful. I have one single cut kyanite gemstone.

I always like finding kyanite. It has a really nice colour and tells a lot about the history of the rock, particularly how deep it formed within the earth's crust... typically 24 km or more, but was pushed back up by tectonic forces, for us to see millions of years after it formed.
