The way around a dispute over spelling is not to avoid the controversial word and substitute another where no disagreement exists. The word 'donut' is utterly ghastly and appallingly wrong. Do bakers make bread with 'do'? No! And why not spell 'bread' as 'bred'? You can see where this is going. It is going to Wrongsville. Or Rongsvil. Ho Hum.

I prefer "doughnut" myself, TLC, but I was thinking about marketability rather than spelling. Why sell either "doughnuts" or "donuts" when you can sell more beignets, and at a higher price? And if they're real beignets they're a vast improvement on yer doughnut.

I imagine "donut" became popular as a way to trademark names (e. g., Mr. Donut, Dunkin' Donuts) for the generic doughnut. Now, what gets my goat is the apostrophe in Dunkin'. But again maybe it was easier to get a trademark that way..

Oh -- what really gets my goat: "one-year anniversary". Aaaaaagh!!

I guess we both feel a little better after a moderate rant. I agree with you concerning marketability, but there are some towns where a large quantity of familiar sweet food for not a lot of cash is a treat that might otherwise not be available. I recall George Orwell wrote about this in 'The Road to Wigan Pier' although he may not have highlighted Type 2 Diabetes and dental cavies as much as he should.
