Common Blue - Polyommatus icarus

Common Blue - Polyommatus icarus
The beautiful little Common Blue - Polyommatus icarus - is quite a small butterfly with a wingspan of only 2.7 - 3.4 cm. The male is the one with bright blue uppersides, as this one is, while the female is generally brown with varying amounts of blue. It is common throughout Britain and Europe. This one was seen resting by the side of the Leeds and Liverpol Canal, (Leigh branch), near Scotmans Flash, Wigan.
