White-Throated Kingfisher - Halcyon smyrnensis

White-Throated Kingfisher - Halcyon smyrnensis
The beautifully coloured White-Throated Kingfisher is widespread throughout Asia from Turkey through to the Philippines. Also known as the Smyrna Kingfisher or White-Breasted Kingfisher, they will, aside from the obvious fish, also eat tadpoles, grasshoppers, insects, lizards, frogs, crabs and pretty much any small creature which they can catch and kill. Perching on any prominent branch, wire, rooftop, pole etc. they have a loud call, especially in breeding season, when they will burrow into river banks to nest and lay their eggs. Shot from a moving boat on the Mapusa River in Goa, India.
