Taking the air on the Embankment

Taking the air on the Embankment
The years that Whistler lived in Chelsea saw massive changes to the area, including rampant gentrification. This was due to a variety of developments but key was the creation of the Thames Embankment as part of Sir Joseph Bazalgette's massive works to create a modern sewage system for London. This altered the flow of the river and created broad avenues on which the better off could stroll and relax. Whistler's water colour gives a nice sense of the new world of style and display which grew up beside the river in the 1880's
