Aesthetic Dreams
Jo Hiffernan again, this time gone upmarket and set in Whistler's home surrouded by objects designed to demonstrate that this is the home of someone of advanced taste. The river isn't visible here- the justification for including it in the show is the Japanese fan Jo is holding, which does depict a river scene. One wonders if Jo is musing on the one fantastical element in the pciture- the wedding ring she's wearing. Though she was down in the 1861 census as Whistler's wife, they never married, though their relationship was a long time fading (they were still close in the 1880's and he left her money in his will). She had to be moved out when Whistler's mother came to visit....
