Quiet days in Docklands

Quiet days in Docklands
One of the interesting aspects of the show was its coverage of Whistler's less well known graphic art. He first msde his name with a set of engravings of Thames-side scenes. These give a wonderful sense of the slightly crumbing and decrepit buildings facing on to the busy river highway. Things look quiet in this piece, drawn at what looks to be low tide. The waterman in the forground may well be Whistler's minder- docklands had a reputation for criminality and violence and a well dressed stranger doing something as odd as sketching would have been a target for mugging
