Portrait of the artist as a young dog

Portrait of the artist as a young dog
James Abbott Mac Neill Whistler at his most raffish. One gets a sense of the man's charm but not perhaps the combative streak to his nature (not for nothing was his collected correspondence entitled "The Gentle Art of Making Enemies"). By the time he engraved this he had been expelled from West Point and returned to Europe- where he had spent most of his childhood- to study art in Paris. He moved to London in the late 1850's and remained there on and off for the rest of his life. The Dulwich Gallery show on the role of the River Thames in his art has closed, though it's heading for Amherst Massachussetts and then the Smithsonian (if anybody is interested)
