Vermeer's "musical" paintings tend to feel more distanced than others in the show. Well dressed young women play instruments in the interiors of what are clearly the houses of the wealthy. The instruments they're playing are top range too- this one is lavishly decorated with a landscape painted on the lid. It was common pratice to buy instruments "plain" and commission a painter to decorate them- Vermeer himself is thought to have topped up his income this way. It is intriguing that the inventory of goods taken after his death does not list a single musical instrument- one of the many mysteries surrounding his life.

The musician looks up, away from the keyboard. It's impossible to tell whether she's glad at the distraction or not......
