"Its not as hard as it looks, honest"
My latest blog deals with the National Gallery exhibition on Vermeer and music. The Vermeer reference is nearly a Trade Descriptions Act offence- there are only five Vermeers in the show (and one of them is a dodgy attribution). This is one of the "real" ones; a young lady getting some guitar practice in. Like so many of Vermeer's work, there's a sense that we as viewers are not quite welcome in the imagined space; in this case the musician seems more concerned by someone or something "out of shot" to her right. The guitar was something of a novelty in the Netherlands at the time Vermeer painted this- so presumably expensive and a demonstration of elite status
