Gertler's Fruit Sorters

Gertler's Fruit Sorters
Like Bomberg, Gertler was a scholarship boy from the East End whose Slade studies were funded by a Jewish charity. I suspect he gets a slightly raw deal from the Dulwich show in that some of his best known works aren't included; even so, the overwhelming impression is of a man who struggled to find a truly personal style. This piece dating from 1914 is a reminder that modernist influences weren't the only ones around in this period; there was also an ongoing fascination with early Renaissance art. I don't know how many apple pickers in, say, Kent, would have been wandering round with baskets which seem to be headdresses as much as utilitarian recepticles for fruit.... It's a bit odd- are there supposed to be deeper meanings here? If so it's hard to identify the mythology being name checked....
