Mus and Apodemus skulls

Mus and Apodemus skulls
Mus and Apodemus:
To the left is a lab-bred House Mouse Mus musculus – note the flatter profile of the cranium and the notched incisor. To the right is a Wood Mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus – or perhaps a Yellow-neck. Note the lack of incisor notch and the more protruding tips of the nasal bones. One of my first ever specimens, found in Llangollen north Wales in 1971. I made a rather careless job of preparing this as a teenager; part of the cheekbone (zygomatic arch) is missing and the tympanic bullae or ‘ear drum’ aren’t quite located correctly onto the posterior part of the skull.
