Northern Shrike

Northern Shrike
Late afternoon yesterday, shortly before dusk, a Northern Shrike- Lanius excubitor- showed up in our beech tree. This is a bird that we see rarely. My son and I each were able to get a documenting shot from our living room window...this is, obviously, not a great photo, but the bird was at least 70 feet from us and, as you can see, it was snowing. Pretty cool anyway....

Cool find! A hardy little guy, sitting up there in the snow with you rather than enjoying some place south!

I like the way the snow is coming down on the Shrike. These birds are very common here in northern Alberta, Canada. I guess that is why they call them Northern Shrikes. They commonly site on power lines and wait for super to fly by.

With the snow I can't think of a better camouflage for this beautiful little bird.
